wasabia japonica "daruma" variety. this is real wassabi plant for making real wassabi paste for sushi. i bought three on amazon.they were slow being shipped but once shipped they delivered fast.in mylar bubble box with cold pack.plants in bag.each had a small leaflet.i put them in gallon jugs as starter pot with a potting mixture of high amounts of perlite rocks and peatmoss.some rabbit poo and other ingredients.very loose soil with high water retention. i water them each evening about a shot glass of rain water.they were each about the size of a thumb when delivered.ive had them three days in my bathroom which is lit by a four foot flourescent twin bulb grow bulbs of red and blue.this is not very bright light for being seven feet from floor.the plantlets seem to like it as all have leaves pointing up and dark green.

it takes two years to mature and whole stems at maturity cost around a hundred dollars a pound in japan. they grow suckers off the sides that can be pulled and replanted to eventually create more plants. daruma is suppose to be the sweeter version.

the potting soil was something i built last year and allowed to weather and biodegrade.i had bought a case of grape jelly at an auction that was spoiled.i only paid five bucks so i didnt care if it was bad.what i wanted it for was as ferts.jelly has water retention characteristics and sugars.so each tub of soil i mixed up had a bottle added. i also got free sweet and sour sauce bags from my last job.institutional size.like one quart each.i had about fifty of them.so i added one of those to each tub.the tubs had holes for drainage and were allowed to be rained in and decay.all mixed together.as you can see the soil looks very black and nutritious.each tub got about a shovel or two of rabbit droppings also. i may add some fish emulsion at a later date after plants get well established.in organic growing you cant go wrong with a tablespoon of fish emulsion in a gallon of water.

had some bad luck .i think i water logged them.they started drooping. i pulled them out and repotted adding some chainsaw chips from oaks to fluff the soil and add air and better drainage.repotted in small pots with holes in bottoms to add more air flow.hopefully they start sprouting new growth. i pinched off the wilted stems and leaves and ate them, they tasted like fresh mustard greens.absolutely no difference in taste just a softer texter to the pallet.

im not real enthused about it and its variance in flavor compared to horseradish or mustard is not much either.i suspect i could grind up a mustard stalk or radish stalk and get close to the same flavor profile.
