Beehive beetles are a minor threat to hives but still a nuisance.
I was researching them and came across an idea i hadnt read about. Hive beetles go into the ground as larva but must first crawl through the port at the entrance of a hive. If the hive is elevated by blocks and a teflon coated pan is set underneath it,the larva will drop into the pan and cant escape.they will die in the pan from exposure to uv.After about one year the hive should be free of beetles.

Maybe put a little cooking oil in the pan so they are extra slimy and drown.plus it weights the pan down so it doesnt blow away.

Cancel the oil idea, some bees drown in it.the pan idea may work though.

Got two more hive splits today.got stung like ten times.i think because im sweating is why im almost immune.its nothing to me. This makes seven hives now.when splitting my second one i thought all the eggs would be in the bottom box and only pulled one frame, told my girls to have a talk with the queen or shes getting evicted.
i put the second box back on to just inspect.all ten frames were full of eggs and larva.i could have made five splits easily out of that one hive.
I thought all the weight was honey.it was eggs.them supers are a back breaker.i thought no way them things that heavy.i read up on weights online and when they talk of fifty pounds a box, they talking of mediums.those supers are like 100lbs.if i hadent of been a big guy,no way could i lift one.not up at the four feet height.
The weathers been amazing this year, perfect temps for making comb.bees only make comb between 70°and 90°.averaged 80° for two months now.
So hopefully they make some queens and i go into fall flow with seven hardy hives.i can then split in spring and double my hive count again plus finally have real honey money next summer.once i get to twenty hives, i have to register with the state.ill have enough honey then to be a wholesaler.
